Holly Logan, LDA
Founder

In the late 1990's, Holly Logan opened her first paralegal office on Main Street in El Cajon.  She started "Paralegal Services of San Diego County" to help pro pers needing help with court documents.  She quickly amassed a loving and loyal clientele, drawn to her warmth and caring nature. Over the years, the office moved several times, before finding the long-standing office at 560 Broadway in El Cajon. After (2) decades,  Holly  welcomed her daughter, Meggin Hurlburt, into the business, mentoring her and sharing her experience.   It was at that time that "Legal Assistants of San Diego County" was born, ensuring Holly and Meggin were bonded and registered Legal Document Assistants.  In (2021) the El Cajon office was closed, allowing remote work.  In April 2023, Holly retired, leaving Meggin to continue the business and honor her legacy within the San Diego community.

What is an LDA?

For the first time, a new California law known as SB1418 authorizes non-lawyers to prepare legal documents for people doing their own legal tasks. Effective January 1, 2000, these non-lawyers, called Legal Document Assistants, may:

  • Distribute to their customers legal materials that have been published or approved by a lawyer

  • Prepare the customers’ legal documents under the direction of their customers

  • File the customers’ legal documents in the appropriate courts

What can an LDA do?

An LDA is an experienced professional who is authorized to prepare legal documents for a client, but only at the direction of the client. In other words, an LDA is there to assist the “self-help” client handle their own legal matters without the cost of an attorney. Since even the best legal, self-help books can be confusing and overwhelming, your LDA can provide invaluable assistance with routine legal tasks, such as typing and filing the paperwork for uncontested divorces, bankruptcies, wills, and many other types of documents. Again, because an LDA is forbidden to practice law of any sort, they cannot make suggestions as to what the client needs done for a particular matter, or what forms that the client must file with the state or the other party to the action.

Why hire an LDA?

  • LDAs provide a low-cost alterative to hiring an attorney for routine paperwork.

  • In many cases, one visit will usually be sufficient for you to be able to handle most matters.

  • LDAs will provide you with top-quality legal typing assistance.

Patient, Kind, Caring

"Paperwork can be very confusing or overwhelming - especially for people like me without much experience - but LASDC made it easy. Meggin helped my family so much I can't even put it all into words! She has been patient, kind, caring, professional, and courteous every step of the way."

Professional and Friendly

"If you ever find you should have said "I don't" instead if "I do", give Meggin a call. Her professional and friendly demeanor made filing the divorce paperwork the easiest part of unraveling our same-sex marriage.

TBH I had to file twice. I paid the reasonable fee to file the paperwork and then came back when we decided to reconcile for the holidays. But once the new year rolled around we had to call Meggin up and go through the process again. My husband and I were on the same page on a marriage settlement agreement so it was just a matter of signing the docs giving the check and waiting.

Her response time was quick for our minutiae questions. "How long will this take." "Why is the court taking so long" "what is the status" etc. The whole process took about 8 months (the second time)

The reality is you can file your own paperwork but the courts don't make it easy. So many forms and rules. Legal Assistants make it such a breeze. Definitely recommend."

Creative & Resourceful

"I had an unusual family law situation and needed help preparing and filing the right paperwork. Based on the reviews, I contacted Legal Assistants and explained the situation. Meggin responded quickly. She drafted the forms and filed them after we reviewed them. Unfortunately, the judge rejected the initial filing for an obscure legal reason. Meggin then prepared a second set of forms (which we paid extra for), and after a court hearing, we achieved the result we wanted. She sent us a copy of the final judgment, which I appreciated. This was a difficult project due to its unusual nature, but Meggin never gave up. The fees were reasonable given the work required. She was professional and responsive throughout."
